Managing Stress and Wellness
One of the major problems facing farming families in the 21st century is coping with stress caused by change. Rapid changes in communication, transportation, information processing, world population, energy technology, economic development and assembly line production have revolutionized the lifestyles of rural Americans.
Coping with pressures in the agribusiness has taken a toll on the health of many people. Hypertension, heart disease, cancer, arthritis, migraine headaches and respiratory ailments join low back pain as the most prevalent medical disorders associated with farm life. Farming is also one of the most hazardous occupations, and accidents are related to stress levels.
Dr. Jerry W. Robinson, Jr., Ph.D. developed a course to help people in the agribusiness learn how to manage physical and mental stress more effectively by increasing the knowledge of stress and behavior, improving stress management skills, and through learning activities designed to develop a wellness lifestyle.
